Turkey has been struck by an earthquake at 13:41 (10:41 GMT) at a depth of 20km (12 miles), with its epicentre 16km north-east of Van in eastern Turkey, on Sunday the 23rd of October, 2011 . The quake measured 7.2 on the Richter scale. The current death toll is more than 500 and more than 1000 buildings have been destroyed. Thousands have been rendered homeless.

Humanity First held its 6th disaster response course on 5th-7th of October, 2011. This was organised in conjunction with the Leicester division of the UK ISAR team. The 3 day course was attended by 26 delegates from varying backgrounds including doctors, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists and logistics people. The course has proved to be an excellent tool for training future medical response team members. We are delighted to welcome Conrad Buckle, A&E consultant, Vice President of of the African doctors association and advisor to the Ghanian Government on Emergency Care. We also welcome Mr David Nott, consultant surgeon at St Mary's who has years of field experience alongside Dr Justine Lowe, consultant anaesthetist at the Imperial who will also be contributing to our future newsletter publications.

We are delighted to announce the publication of the 2nd edition of the Humanity First Disaster Response manual. The new edition incorporates a number of changes in keeping with the current UK and WHO medical guides and protocols.
To avoid delay, this manuscript has been made avaiable to the trainers and course delegates for the 6th course. This is yet to go through our publishing team.
We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed producing it and wish to thank all the authors especially our editor Dr Faisal Ahmed without whom this manuscript would not be possible. We all also thank all the authors for the invaluable contribution.

HF Medical teams have dealt over 200,000 medical cases globally in America, Asia Pacific and Africa in disaster areas. In disaster areas we work in close collaboration with local, national and international co-ordinating agencies to provide focused and effective help.
HF establishes zones in a camp for triage, immediate, major and minor cases. The camp management team supports with security, sanitation, food and water, supplies and logistics.

We now provide training in disaster response with faculty which includes specialists in the NHS UK and members of ISAR UK. We have now published the second edition of our manual to enable medical carers from all backgrounds to learn and provide uniform standardised care inline with current highest standards of practice. The course provides delegates with the closest experience to providing care in a disaster environment. We teach about disaster classification, response co-ordination, safety and security and importance of inter-agency communication.
Humanity First medical staff returning from disaster response missions have outlined attendance in this course as compulsory for volunteering in the disaster response team. They felt that this course provided them with essential skills to manage in the field (disaster zone with no facilities)

COURSE VENUE (THE UK ISAR TRAINING SITE)
Humanity First medical held its 4th disaster response course on March 25th-27th, 2011. This was organised in conjunction with the Leicester division of the UK International Search and Rescue (ISAR) team. The 3 day course was attended by 25 attendees from UK and US and included doctors, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists and logistics people from various backgrounds.
Humanity First International is delighted to report that our successful and popular Disaster Response Course has now travelled abroad.
The 5th Humanity First International Disaster Response Course was successfully held in Dulles, Virginia, USA on 5th, 6th and 7th of May 2011. The course was attended by 36 delegates. The 15 faculty members form UK and USA disaster response teams followed the format and standards developed by the HF International Medical team on principles outlined in the Disaster Response manual. The course was supported by the local fire and rescue and a number of actors helped to run the mock disaster scenarios. We are very pleased to report excellent feedback form the delegates who in particular enjoyed the field exercies.
HF medical camps have run regularly in Ghana, Togo, Kenya, Niger, Burkina Fasso, Benin and Macedonia.
We are aware that communities are better served by providing long-term assistance and are now concentrating more on developing health infrastructure in areas of need.
HF Medical UK has started first phase its medical development project in Uganda, Africa.
The HF medical team from UK has made 3 trips over the last 9 months. We are working closely with HF Uganda.
We have now established contacts with health officials in Uganda and now provide training and equipment according to the local need guided by the local hospital staff and health officials.
The HF medical team brings a varied specialist experience comprising of paediatricians, gastroenterologists and nutritionalists, neonatologists, physicians, surgeons (orthopaedic, general/oral) and ophthalmologists currently serving in the National Health Service in UK
We have shared our resources expertise with a number of local NGOs in Uganda offering to share our resources and expertise. We have to date provided for a number of requests regarding teaching and training to the local health professionals.

The 4th Humanity First Medical disaster response course is being organised on March 25th - 27th (both dates inclusive), 2011 at the ISAR site in Leicester UK.
The 5th disaster response course 'train the trainer's course' will be held inthe USA in May 2011. This is a view to develop satellite centres to provide training in other countries.

Humanity First Medical UK team has now made its fourth trip to Uganda (Sep-Oct 2010). The team included surgeons, physicians and a specialist in neonatology.
The purpose is to provide training and provide for general medical and paediatric care with a view to impact on the infant mortality rate.

Unfortunately, human suffering still continues in the 21st century. We (Humanity First Medical) are a group of dedicated professionals keen to help and alleviate human suffering, where possible.
There is a constant need for volunteers at the humanity first medical. We are looking for dedicated individuals all the time and need your help.
We need assistance and volunteers at all levels to deal with supplies in our warehouse, administrative work, running training courses, information dissemination and medical personnel for our projects in Africa and participate as members for the disaster response team

Humanity First staff members are voluntary workers and do NOT take a salary. More than 90% of the charity money goes directly to the people in need. We use our Humanity First offices based in various countries to ensure the money goes to people and children in need.
We do not make profit from the HF medical disaster response course. The fees are kept nominal for this reason.
