HF Medical Disaster Response Courses
We now provide training in disaster response with faculty which includes specialists in the NHS UK and members of ISAR UK. We have published the first edition of our manual to enable medical carers from all backgrounds to learn and provide uniform standardised care inline with highest standards. The course provides delegates with the closest experience to providing care in a disaster environment. We teach about disaster classification, response co-ordination, safety and security and importance of inter-agency communication.
The third HF medical disastere response course was successfully held at the UK ISAR training site in Leicester, UK on 18th-20th of June, 2010. HF medical staff recently returning from Haiti have outlined attendance in this course as compulsory for volunteering in the disaster response team. They felt that this course provided them with essential skills to manage in the field (disaster zone with no facilities)
Please contact us using the form below if you are interested to attend or wish to have information about our next disaster response course. The email will be send to the HF course organisers based in Leicester

Media Resources
What we do ?
The press office team offers a service to national and
international journalists who are looking for information
about the international and domestic work of Humanity
First medical teams. We can arrange meetings with
HF medical personnel involved with first hand care. We
have even organised interviews with the team based on
the ground.
We also work to promote our emergency response to
disasters in the UK and overseas. The press office team is
run by medical personnel giving us better insight into
not only the workings of the team but to apporpriately
highlight major issues such as the problems encountered
by countries in need and disaster preparedness.
In addition we have a unique advantage of having branches
in several countries which enables us to better understand
the real issues and co-operate closely with NGOs based
on the ground.

Humanity First Medical disaster response team in Haiti, January 2010
A major earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, wreaked havoc in the impoverished Caribbean island of Haiti. The earthquake struck
on January 12th at 5pm EST in a highly populated region 17 km from the capital city of Port-au-Prince. More than 200,000 people including
children are dead. Humanity First International mobilised medical teams to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The first team from Canada/USA landed on
17th of January followed by team from UK on the 22nd of January. Dr Shabbir Bhatti led the Humanity First medical teams during operations
in Haiti.
"You look at the damage and rubble and can't even imagine where to start
clearing" Dr. Shabbir Bhatti speaks to Bill Gibb at 'The Weekly News'
"Even as we treated the physical injuries we knew there were huge
psychological problems. However I think the Haiti people were taking
strength from each other" Dr Shabbir Bhatti
"It is very strange having someone with gun at your side as you
are trying to work"
The medical team from UK joined teams from US and Canada to form a medical team of 21 doctors, paramedics and
logistics and started new operations in the Carre-Four area west of Port au Prince. They relieved a team of 14 already
on the ground at Port au Prince. The move was an effort to focus our teams closer to the epicentre of the quake where
many thousands of people were still without any medical care. The HF team had set up camp alongside the UN camp to
provide medical support. The team treated over 500 people many of whom were still carrying injuries from the
earthquake. The HF team worked closely with the UN team on the ground. The HF medical team treated a staggering
700+ patients every day; their professionalism, team working and dedication to patient care never dampened by the
harsh conditions in which they found themselves.

Humanity First Medical UK teams in Uganda, 2009 to date
The aim of the Humanity FIrst medical team's project in UK is to work on strategic improvements, infra-structure
development, knowledge transfer and resource deployment in the areas of emergency care, maternal health,
neonatal health, chronic diseases and disaster/emergency response.
During the HF medical teams visit in March-April 2010, meetings were held with Ugandan Government Minsters
Primary health, Disaster response and Land to discuss our project. We also met with officials at Mulago Hospital
attached to Makerre University in Kampala, the only teaching hospital in the country including the Director of the
hospital and heads of departments of Accident and Emergency, Surgery, Maternity and Neonatal medicine and
have had Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) signed with the hospital and these departments to work on the
project collaboratively. While in Mulago we held training sessions for doctors working in the departments of
Neonatology, accident and emergency and obstetrics and gynaecology as well as 3rd and 4th year medical
students.
We also travelled to the Eastern region where meetings
were held with the Town Mayor, Council chairmen, local
MPs and regional directors of health in the districts of
Mbale, Sironko and Budaka as well as the Muncipality of
Mbale (the second largest town in Uganda) and director
of Mbale regional referral hospital where the HF medical
team signed joint Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs)
to continue with the collaborative project.
Training sessions were held for clinicians (doctors, clinical
officers, nurses and midwives) in all these districts
concentrating on neonatal resuscitation, general
paediatrics and the diagnosis and management of
hypertension and diabetes. To date HF medical UK has
trained over 800 clinical practitioners responsible for over
2 million Ugandans
We have had tremendous feedback and are returning to
Uganda in September 2010 to concentrate on furthering
training in resuscitation and trauma management and
co-ordinate a medical development conference in Mbale
bringing those concerned together and try and improve
things collectively.
The needs are really enormous in Uganda - maternal
mortality rate is approx. 6%, neonatal mortality is between
7-9% and there is a huge room for improvement all round.
We are intending to run this project for the long-term so
if you are interested in spending two weeks to train local
clinicians, it would be most welcome and would make a
huge difference to people in serious need.
